I made an autorickshaw driver laugh today when I said "stop, mari (sp?)" after he passed my house. I didn't think he was expecting that. But it made me smile to make him laugh. :)

I will miss this place. I really hope I get to come back often on business as well as personal trips of course!

hi i just came across ur blog today.very interesting and makes a good read.im a bangalorean, single male..n sure do know how u felt about ur early days of not being able to go out to the discs and the need for progressive and trancy stuff..well being in blore all my life i still find it tough to ask a date out to the discos..hahah so its not just a problem for a non resident..anyways the reason the auto guy laughed was because u used the term "mari", which means a a young animal like a kitten, pup,etc..the right term would have been "maadi"..anyways..read that ur back to the states...wish u all the best...

Hi, Cecilia,

I'm a reporter in Portland planning a reporting trip to India for the fall. I would love to talk with you now by email and in person when you get back. Would you please contact me at aearnshaw@bizjournals.com?
Thanks much,
Aliza

Hi Cecilia,

I was really intrigued to find your blog about your life in India! I am beginning my masters in Anthropology and would love to go there next year for some time of research but am a bit nervous about going as a female all alone. I'd love to ask you questions about your time there, safety, cost of living, etc. (That's great you're from the Northwest! I have family up there but live in SoCal.)

I hope to hear from you sometime.

Thanks!

Alicia

Hi Cecilia,

I studied at Bangalore University as an undergraduate and being from the northen part of India, 'Stop Mari/Maddi' was one of the first terms I picked up as well.

A few other helpful words:

Esto = How much
Yen Samachara = What's new/ What's the latest?
Chana gidiya = I'm fine

Keep up the good work with the blog.!

Hi, did you hear about this challenge? I came across it in the news...

Be part of history and don’t miss the birth of a new motorsport. The Indian Autorickshaw Challenge is a 1000 km (590 miles) rally through the most scenic roads of South India in a three wheel motorized vehicle. The race is open to everyone regardless of experience, nationality, and age. Rickshaws will be provided by the organizers. You’ll have 2 days to prep your vehicle before the start. Please visit www.indianarc.com for more info.
